In the Land of the Yi, in Yunnan, Guizhou, Guangxi and south Sichuan around Xichang, most Yi people are scattered in mountainous areas at high altitudes, and a small number of them live on flat land or in valleys. Long have the local people of the Yi ethnic minority lived in extreme poverty that lead many of previous generations into alcohol and drugs abuse, leaving deep scars in the younger generation. But as in all China’s countryside, the younger generation of able workers had fled to find fortune in promising large cities, leaving the kids behind with grandpa and ma.
